The National Institute for Space Research, known in Portuguese as Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais and abbreviated INPE, is the civilian space research organization of Brazil, founded on April 22, 1971 and headquartered in Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, operating under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations. The institute advances scientific research and technological applications in space and atmospheric sciences, aerospace engineering and space technology, while military aerospace activities in Brazil remain the responsibility of the Brazilian Air Force General Command for Aerospace Technology; its stated mission is to foster scientific research and technological applications and to qualify personnel in the fields of space and atmospheric sciences, space engineering and space technology.
