Swiss Space Systems, known as S3, was a company based in Payerne in western Switzerland that planned to provide orbital launches of small satellites and crewed sub-orbital spaceflights, with plans to build a spaceport near Payerne Air Base in 2015. Its suborbital spaceplanes were to be launched from an Airbus A300 for extra speed and altitude before releasing a disposable third stage, and as of March 2013 the company planned to charge 10 million Swiss francs per launch for satellites up to 250 kilograms, with project partners including the European Space Agency, Dassault Aviation and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. The company became heavily indebted and was declared bankrupt by a Swiss civil court on December 14, 2016.
