Saab AB is a Swedish aerospace and defence company, with its subsidiaries collectively known as the Saab Group. The name began as an acronym for the Swedish Aeroplane Corporation. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, while its development and manufacturing operations are carried out in Linköping. It was formally founded by AB Bofors in 1937, when the aero engine division of NOHAB, located in Trollhättan, was reformed into a proper aircraft manufacturer. In 1940 it merged with the aircraft maker ASJA of Linköping, whose design bureau is regarded as the spiritual predecessor of today's company, and the two factories became SAAB/T and SAAB/L. From 1947 the company also built automobiles; that division was spun off as Saab Automobile in 1990. Between 1968 and 1995 it was merged with the commercial vehicle maker Scania-Vabis as Saab-Scania, and the two were separated again in 1995 by their new owners, Investor AB. It is listed here as a long-established aerospace and defence company.
