Committee on Space Research (COSPAR)

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) is an international non-governmental scientific organization established on October 3, 1958, by the International Council for Scientific Unions, with Hildegard Kallmann-Bijl serving as its first chair. Headquartered in Paris, France, and operating in English and French, COSPAR promotes international space research through the free exchange of results, information and opinions, chiefly by hosting a major scientific assembly roughly every two years that draws about 3,000 researchers, publishing findings, and maintaining long-term reference efforts such as atmospheric and ionosphere models. It also serves as the internationally recognized standard-setter for planetary protection policy governing space exploration missions.
