Avio S.p.A. is an Italian aerospace company headquartered in Colleferro, near Rome, that manufactures solid-propellant motors for space and tactical propulsion along with electronic and electrical control and automation systems. The company traces its roots to 1908 and took its current form in a 2003 merger, when Fiat divested its aerospace division to The Carlyle Group and Finmeccanica. Avio is the prime contractor for the European Space Agency Vega launcher family, including the Vega C and Vega E variants, and also serves as a subcontractor on the Ariane program; the original Vega rocket first flew successfully in February 2012 and has completed eighteen further flights since. The company is listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, with Leonardo S.p.A. holding a 19 percent stake, and reported revenue of about 357 million euros in 2022 with roughly 1,216 employees across five sites in Italy, France and French Guiana.
