The European Space Research Organisation, known as ESRO, was an international organisation founded by ten European nations in 1964 to jointly pursue scientific research in space, modeled on the existing international scientific institution CERN. Although its founding convention devoted it exclusively to scientific pursuits, ESRO began a telecommunications programme in its final years, and it merged with the European Launcher Development Organisation in 1975 to form the European Space Agency.
