The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, known as ISAS, is a Japanese national research organization using rockets, astronomical satellites and interplanetary probes, which played a major role in Japan space development. It was established as part of the University of Tokyo in 1964, and the institute later spun off from the university to come under the direct purview of the Ministry of Education. Since 2003 it has been a division of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, known as JAXA.
