KEO

Satellite

KEO was a proposed space time capsule intended to carry messages from present day Earth to humanity fifty thousand years in the future, when it would reenter Earth's atmosphere. Its name was chosen from the three most commonly used sounds across the world's most widely spoken languages, and its organizers invited contributions from everyone, encouraging messages from children, senior citizens, and the illiterate so that every culture and demographic would be represented, and committing not to censor any message received. The launch was delayed repeatedly by major geopolitical events, including the September 11 attacks and the restructuring of the European Space Agency, and in July 2025 the project's organizers announced on its website that the KEO project would close without ever launching the satellite.
