KOMPSAT-2

Satellite

KOMPSAT-2, also known as Arirang 2, is a lightweight South Korean Earth observation satellite developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Its Multi-Spectral Camera, a joint development of the institute with ELOP of Israel and OHB-System of Germany, collects panchromatic and multispectral imagery at one meter ground resolution, which supports mapping, digital elevation models, land use planning and disaster and risk management over the Korean peninsula. Astrium supported development and manufacture of the platform. Planned for a 2004 launch, it was delayed by its Rokot-KM booster and finally launched on 28 July 2006 from Plesetsk in Russia into a sun-synchronous orbit of 677 by 703 kilometers, identical to that of KOMPSAT-1 but 180 degrees out of phase. It weighs 798 kilograms and has a three-year design life. In October 2015 its systematic observation service was not extended and it was reserved for research until the end of its life.
