ALOS-2

Satellite

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2, also called Daichi-2, is a Japanese satellite weighing about 2,120 kilograms that launched in 2014. Unlike its predecessor ALOS, which carried two optical cameras alongside an L-band radar, ALOS-2 had its optical cameras removed to simplify construction and reduce costs. Its PALSAR-2 radar is a significant upgrade over the earlier PALSAR radar, adding higher resolution spotlight imaging modes alongside the ten meter resolution survey mode inherited from ALOS. The satellite also carries the SPAISE2 automatic ship identification system and a Compact Infrared Camera, which together supply data about ocean going ships and provide early warning of missile launches.
