Venus Express was the first Venus exploration mission of the European Space Agency. It was launched by a Soyuz-FG rocket with a Fregat upper stage on November 9, 2005, arrived at Venus in April 2006 and began continuously sending back science data from its polar orbit around the planet. Equipped with seven scientific instruments, its main objective was the long-term observation of the Venusian atmosphere, which had never been done over such long periods by earlier Venus missions and was key to understanding the dynamics of that atmosphere. The European Space Agency concluded the mission in December 2014.
