The Ulysses mission was a joint project of the European Space Agency and NASA, under ESA leadership with participation from the National Research Council of Canada, to orbit the Sun and study it at all latitudes. The robotic probe launched on October 6, 1990, and made three fast latitude scans of the Sun in 1994 and 1995, 2000 and 2001, and 2007 and 2008, and it also studied several comets. To leave the plane of the planets and reach a steeply inclined solar orbit, mission planners used a gravity assist at Jupiter. The last day of mission operations was June 30, 2009.
