The Parker Solar Probe mission is a NASA project to observe the outer corona of the Sun with a probe launched on August 12, 2018. The spacecraft used repeated gravity assists from Venus to reach an eccentric orbit that approaches within 9.86 solar radii of the center of the Sun, and at its closest approach in 2024 it moved at about 690,000 kilometres per hour relative to the Sun, the fastest object ever built on Earth. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory designed and built the spacecraft, which became the first NASA spacecraft named after a living person, the physicist Eugene Newman Parker.
