SMART-1 was a European Space Agency mission whose satellite orbited the Moon. It was launched on September 27, 2003, at 23:14 UTC from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. The name stands for Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology-1, and the mission belonged to the agency's Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology programme. On September 3, 2006, at 05:42 UTC, the satellite was deliberately crashed into the surface of the Moon, which ended the mission after nearly three years.
