Mars Pathfinder was an American robotic spacecraft that landed a base station and a lightweight rover on Mars in 1997. It consisted of a lander, renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station after touchdown, and a 10.6-kilogram wheeled rover named Sojourner, the first rover to operate outside the Earth-Moon system. The mission was launched by NASA and directed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as part of NASA's Discovery Program.
