Surveyor 1

Lunar Lander

Surveyor 1 was a NASA robotic spacecraft that became the first American spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, touching down on June 2, 1966, just months after the Soviet Union Luna 9 became the first spacecraft of any nation to do so. It was the first of NASA Surveyor program of robotic lunar landers, sent to test landing technology and survey candidate landing sites ahead of the crewed Apollo missions, and it transmitted thousands of images of the lunar surface during its operating life.
