Vladimir Remek is a Czechoslovak Air Force pilot who became the first person from a country other than the Soviet Union or the United States to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in March 1978 as part of the Interkosmos program to the Salyut 6 space station. He spent about eight days in orbit conducting joint Soviet-Czechoslovak scientific experiments, and he later served as a member of the European Parliament and as Czech ambassador to Russia.
