Sigmund Jahn

Sigmund Jahn was an East German Air Force pilot who became the first German citizen to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in August 1978 as part of the Interkosmos program to the Salyut 6 space station. He spent about eight days in orbit conducting joint Soviet-East German scientific experiments, and after German reunification he went on to advise the European Space Agency and later worked with the German space agency on cosmonaut and astronaut training matters.
