Ilan Ramon was an Israeli Air Force colonel and fighter pilot who became the first Israeli astronaut, flying as a payload specialist aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on mission STS-107 in January 2003. He carried out experiments during the sixteen-day mission, including research related to dust storms and their effect on climate. Ramon was among the seven crew members killed when Columbia broke apart during reentry on February 1, 2003, and his death was mourned as a national loss in Israel.
