Georgi Ivanov was a Bulgarian Air Force pilot who became the first Bulgarian citizen to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in April 1979 as part of the Interkosmos program toward the Salyut 6 space station. A docking failure prevented his spacecraft from linking up with the station as planned, cutting the mission short, and Ivanov returned to Earth without having boarded Salyut 6, though his flight still stood as Bulgarias first crewed spaceflight achievement.
