Portal Space Systems

Portal Space Systems is an American aerospace company headquartered in Bothell, Washington, established in 2021 by chief executive and co-founder Jeff Thornburg along with co-founders Ian Vorbach and Prashaanth Ravindran. The company develops maneuverable spacecraft intended to provide orbital mobility, the ability to rapidly change orbits for defense, civil and commercial customers, specializing in commercializing solar thermal propulsion technology that uses concentrated sunlight to heat propellant as an alternative to traditional chemical and electric propulsion. Its spacecraft platforms are named Supernova and Starburst, and the company is preparing its first on-orbit demonstration for early 2026, launching aboard a Momentus orbital service vehicle to validate its flight computer, avionics and flight software.
