Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder

Ground-Based Radio and Millimeter Observatories

A radio telescope array at the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in the Mid West region of Western Australia, built between 2009 and 2019 as a precursor instrument for the international Square Kilometre Array project. It comprises 36 identical 12-meter parabolic dish antennas working as a single interferometer, used for wide-field surveys of galaxy formation and evolution and for the detection of radio transients including fast radio bursts.

FAQs

Why can the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder survey the sky so quickly?

A phased array feed receiver on each of its 36 antennas lets it survey wide areas of sky fast.

CSIRO says the key is a radio camera called a phased array feed receiver, mounted at the apex of each of the telescope's 36 dish antennas. Together the antennas work as one telescope. The Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, the fastest survey of the southern sky ever completed according to CSIRO, documented three million galaxies in only 300 hours, and one million of those galaxies had never been seen before.
