Lowell Observatory

Ground-Based Optical Observatories

An observatory founded in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894 by the businessman and astronomer Percival Lowell, who used it to study Mars and to search for a hypothesized ninth planet. That search culminated in Clyde Tombaugh's 1930 discovery of Pluto there, made using the observatory's 13-inch astrograph.
