Crimean Astrophysical Observatory

Ground-Based Optical Observatories

An astrophysical observatory near the village of Nauchnyi in Crimea, established in 1945 and among the world's most prolific sites for minor planet discovery, credited with roughly 1,286 numbered minor planets found between 1966 and 2007 by astronomers including Lyudmila Chernykh, Nikolai Chernykh and Tamara Smirnova. Its instruments include the 2.6-meter Shain telescope and the 1.22-meter AZT-11 reflector, and it has published its own bulletin since 1947, in English since 1977.

FAQs

Why is there also a Crimean Astrophysical Observatory at Simeiz?

The observatory moved from Simeiz to Nauchnyi in the mid-1950s; the Simeiz site is still used and has its own code 094.

Because the observatory moved. Its facilities have stood at the settlement of Nauchnyi, under IAU observatory code 095, since the mid-1950s, and before that they were further south, near Simeiz. The older Simeiz facilities still see some use and are referred to as the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory Simeiz, with IAU code 094.
