Thomas Reiter is a retired German astronaut and Brigadier General in the German Air Force who was selected by the European Space Agency in 1992. He flew two spaceflights: the Euromir 95 mission to the Mir space station aboard Soyuz TM-22, during which he became the first German astronaut to perform a spacewalk, and a later mission to the International Space Station with Expeditions 13 and 14 that returned aboard Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-116. Across both missions he accumulated about 350 days in space, among the top 25 astronauts by total spaceflight duration, and after retiring in 2007 he served as the European Space Agency's Director of Human Spaceflight and Operations from 2011 to 2015.
