Gerhard Thiele is a German physicist and former European Space Agency astronaut who earned a doctorate in environmental science from Heidelberg University in 1985 and completed postdoctoral work at Princeton. He was selected for the German astronaut team in 1988, received Space Shuttle mission specialist training through NASA in 1996, and joined the European Space Agency in 1998. He flew his only spaceflight in 2000 aboard STS-99, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, spending over 11 days in orbit, and retired from the European Astronaut Corps in October 2005.
