Bjarni Tryggvason

Bjarni Tryggvason is an Icelandic-born Canadian engineer who was selected as one of six Canadian astronauts by the National Research Council in December 1983, becoming the first Canadian astronaut born in Iceland. He flew his only spaceflight aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-85 from August 7 to 19, 1997, an atmospheric research mission during which he tested the Microgravity Isolation Mount-2 and conducted fluid dynamics experiments over 189 orbits of the Earth. He received the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1997 and joined NASA Astronaut Group 17 in August 1998, training for both Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions, and remains, as of the mid-2020s, the only Canadian astronaut of Icelandic birth.
