Ronald McNair was an American physicist and NASA astronaut, the second African American to fly in space, following his first mission aboard Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984. A laser physicist by training, McNair was selected as a mission specialist for the January 1986 Challenger flight STS-51-L. He was among the seven crew members killed when Challenger broke apart shortly after launch, and he is remembered today through numerous schools, scholarships and a NASA research program named in his honor.
