Norman Thagard is an American physician, engineer and former United States Marine Corps aviator who flew four Space Shuttle missions before becoming the first American to launch aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, traveling to the Mir space station in 1995 as part of the early Shuttle-Mir cooperative program between NASA and the Russian space agency. His roughly three-month stay aboard Mir helped lay the groundwork for the later International Space Station partnership between the two countries.
