Dick Scobee

Dick Scobee was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force officer who commanded the Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-51-L in January 1986, his second spaceflight after piloting an earlier Challenger mission in 1984. He was among the seven crew members killed when Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch due to the failure of a solid rocket booster seal. Scobee is memorialized through the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, founded by families of the crew to continue the mission of inspiring students in science.
