Stuart Roosa was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force officer who served as command module pilot on Apollo 14 in 1971, remaining in lunar orbit while crewmates Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the Moon. A former smokejumper who had fought forest fires before joining NASA, Roosa carried hundreds of tree seeds on the mission as an experiment, which were later germinated and planted across the United States as the well known Moon Trees.
