Judith Resnik was an American electrical engineer and NASA astronaut, the second American woman to fly in space, following her first mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 1984. She was selected as a mission specialist for the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger flight STS-51-L, her second spaceflight. Resnik was among the seven crew members killed when Challenger broke apart shortly after launch on January 28, 1986, one of the most closely studied disasters in the history of American spaceflight.
