James McDivitt was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force officer who commanded Gemini 4 in 1965, during which crewmate Ed White performed the first American spacewalk. McDivitt later commanded Apollo 9 in March 1969, the first crewed test flight of the complete Apollo spacecraft including the lunar module, flown in Earth orbit to rehearse the maneuvers that would be needed for an actual Moon landing. He left NASA soon afterward to pursue a career in the aerospace industry.
