Peggy Whitson is an American biochemist and former NASA astronaut who became the first woman to command the International Space Station, leading Expedition 16, and later commanded Expedition 51 as well. Across her NASA missions and subsequent flights with the private company Axiom Space, Whitson accumulated more cumulative time in space than any other American astronaut and any other woman in the world at various points, and she also holds records for the most spacewalks and most spacewalk time by a woman.
