Joseph Kerwin was an American physician and United States Navy officer who flew as science pilot on the first crewed mission to the Skylab space station in 1973, becoming the first American physician to fly in space. That mission required urgent unplanned repairs after Skylab suffered damage during its own uncrewed launch, and Kerwin took part in the spacewalks needed to fix the station before it could be safely occupied for an extended stay. It was his only spaceflight.
