Edgar Mitchell was an American NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer who served as lunar module pilot on Apollo 14 in 1971, becoming the sixth person to walk on the Moon. During the return flight he reported experiencing a profound personal epiphany while looking at Earth from space, an experience often cited in discussions of what has been called the overview effect. After leaving NASA, Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences to study consciousness and human potential.
