Jean-Pierre Haignere

France

Jean-Pierre Haignere is a French astronaut and Brigadier General in the French Air Force who trained as a test pilot before joining the space program. He was selected by the French space agency CNES in 1985 and by the European Space Agency in 1998, and flew two missions to the Mir space station, a 1993 flight aboard Soyuz TM-17, and a 1999 expedition of 186 days during which he conducted a spacewalk of about six hours and is credited with taking the first photograph of the shadow of a solar eclipse from space. He later co-founded the Astronaute Club Europeen.
