Shackleton Energy Company

Lunar and Deep-Space Exploration Companies

Shackleton Energy Company was a private aerospace venture established in 2007 in Del Valle, Texas, aiming to develop technology for mining lunar ice. Its plan called for a network of refueling stations in low Earth orbit and on the Moon that would extract, purify and convert lunar water ice into liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen rocket fuel, exploiting the fact that moving material from the Moon to low Earth orbit takes only about a fourteenth to a twentieth of the fuel needed to lift the same material from Earth. Despite projecting a human lunar presence by 2021, the company never secured enough funding to reach its milestones.
