McDonnell Douglas Corporation was a major American aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor formed on April 28, 1967 through the merger of James Smith McDonnell's McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Donald Wills Douglas's Douglas Aircraft Company. Beyond well known military and commercial aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet and DC-10, the company contributed significantly to American spaceflight, supplying components for the Saturn V rocket and managing NASA's Mercury and Gemini spacecraft programs. McDonnell Douglas operated until Boeing acquired it in 1997.
