Glenn L. Martin Company

Legacy Aerospace and Defense Conglomerates

The Glenn L. Martin Company was an American aerospace manufacturer founded on August 16, 1912, by aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin, operating from 1917 to 1961 as a major defense contractor producing aircraft for the Second World War and the early Cold War. The company expanded significantly into space technology in the postwar period, developing the Vanguard rocket as one of the first American satellite booster rockets under Project Vanguard, and designing and manufacturing the Titan I and Titan II intercontinental ballistic missiles as well as the later Titan III and Titan IV launch vehicle families. In 1961 the Martin Company merged with the American-Marietta Corporation to form Martin Marietta, which itself later merged with Lockheed Corporation in 1995 to create Lockheed Martin.
